New bridge planned between southern HCMC and downtown

The Nguyen Khoai bridge and road project, spanning nearly 5 km, connects districts 7, 4, and 1, with an investment capital of over 3,700 billion VND, facilitating additional connectivity from the South to the center of Ho Chi Minh City.

The project, recently reported by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, is set to be submitted to the City People's Council for approval of the investment proposal. Initially approved in 2017 with a total capital of 1,250 billion VND, the project's construction scale change has led to the current increased budget of 3,725 billion VND.

According to the feasibility study, the project starts from D1 road (Him Lam residential area, District 7), then crosses the Te Canal through District 4 and continues elevated along Nguyen Khoai Street, crossing Ben Nghe Canal to connect to Vo Van Kiet Boulevard, District 1.

The project has a total length of nearly 5 km. This includes a bridge section approximately 2.5 km long, with a width ranging from 6.5 to 25.5 meters, and a road section extending over 2.3 km, with a width ranging from 26.5 to 61.5 meters.

On the final stretch connecting to District 1, the main bridge section crosses the Ben Nghe Canal and then branches into two, designated as N7 and N8, forming a loop that descends to Vo Van Kiet Street.

The two branches N5 and N6 also help vehicles from Nguyen Khoai bridge get to and from other lanes of Vo Van Kiet Avenue.

In the section passing through District 4, branches N3 and N4 are constructed to connect to Ton That Thuyet Street, enabling two-way traffic to link with the main bridge section, facilitating convenient movement between District 1 and District 7.

On the other side of Te canal in District 7, two branches N1 and N2 were also built for vehicles to go up and down from Nguyen Khoai bridge to Tran Xuan Soan street.

At each branch there are stairs connecting the routes below.

Nguyen Khoai Street is currently one of the main traffic arteries in District 4, often congested, especially during rush hours.

Within the scope of the project, Vo Van Kiet street will be expanded towards Ben Nghe canal to organize synchronous traffic when the project is formed. In District 4, the existing Nguyen Khoai street was upgraded because it was later located under the viaduct.

When the project is formed, from South Saigon through the city center there will be a new connection direction, reducing traffic pressure on existing routes.

When built, Nguyen Khoai bridge and street, in addition to "sharing fire" with the above routes, also helps traffic from Binh Chanh district and district 8 follow Duong Ba Trac street and Nguyen Van Cu bridge to district 1 to reduce congestion.

According to the plan, the Nguyen Khoai project, after being approved for adjustments, will start construction in the fourth quarter of 2024, and be fully completed 3 years later.

In addition, Ho Chi Minh City is building an underpass at the intersection of Nguyen Van Linh - Nguyen Huu Tho, District 7, to help reduce congestion at the key intersection of the southern gateway. At the same time, to increase traffic connection for the above area, Thu Thiem 4 Bridge (connecting District 7 with Thu Thiem New Urban Area) is being planned by the city to invest with a total capital of 5,000 billion VND.
