Construction update Binh Khanh Bridge connecting Nha Be and Can Gio District

Binh Khanh Bridge is a cable-stayed road bridge that is part of the Can Gio Bridge project, with a length of 2.764 km, a vertical clearance of 55 meters, and a capacity of up to 6 lanes.

The Binh Khanh Bridge crosses the Soai Rap River, starting at the intersection of Road 15B and Road No. 2 (Phu Xuan Urban Area, Nha Be). The endpoint connects to Rung Sac Road at a point approximately 1.8 km south of the Binh Khanh Ferry Terminal (Binh Khanh Commune, Can Gio District).

Together with Phuoc Khanh Bridge, Binh Khanh Bridge is part of the Ben Luc – Long Thanh Expressway project, which is a segment of the North-South Expressway (Eastern route).

The construction of Binh Khanh Bridge commenced in August 2015 with a total investment of over 2,800 billion VND. However, in December 2018, after reaching 70% completion, the project was temporarily halted due to funding allocation issues reported by the contractor. In late October 2023, construction of the Binh Khanh Bridge was resumed with renewed efforts.

In terms of architecture, the bridge is designed as a cable-stayed structure with a single tower, depicting the image of a mangrove tree - a characteristic species of the mangrove forest in Can Gio. The bridge utilizes wave-shaped railings, and the lighting columns create an effect reminiscent of the mangrove forest. Additionally, artistic lighting design is incorporated into the bridge.

The current status and progress of the construction of Binh Khanh Bridge

After more than half a year of resumption (since October 2023), Binh Khanh Bridge continues to be implemented by the contractor. The current project progress has reached over 77%, and it is expected that Binh Khanh Bridge will be completed in September 2024.

In package J1, the contractor has already started the construction of span K1, the main span of the bridge. Currently, the contractor is continuing the construction of span K2 as well as other remaining items of the approach bridge. Binh Khanh Bridge is one of the most crucial components of the Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway project.

On the construction site, in package J1, Binh Khanh Bridge, after the resumption period, the construction atmosphere is very urgent. Hundreds of Japanese and Vietnamese engineers and workers are working day and night to pour concrete for the bridge spans.

The section of road leading to Binh Khanh Bridge on the Can Gio side connecting to Phuoc Khanh Bridge towards Nhon Trach (Dong Nai) has also been essentially completed.

Package J3 is the Phuoc Khanh Bridge crossing the Long Tau River, connecting Can Gio District (Ho Chi Minh City) and Nhon Trach District (Dong Nai Province). The bridge has a total length of 3.1km and a vertical clearance of 55m. Previously, this package was carried out by a consortium of Sumitomo Mitsui (Japan) and Cienco 4 (Vietnam). Due to policy mechanism issues, the Phuoc Khanh Bridge package, as well as other packages of the Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway, faced prolonged delays. By 2022, the investor announced the termination of the contract with the contractor of this package.

On December 3, 2023, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport announced that the Can Gio Bridge project in package J3 would be submitted to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council for approval of the investment policy at the 13th session of the 10th term of the People's Council (from December 6 to 9). After resolving the issues, the investor of the Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway proceeded with the bidding process to select a new contractor to continue the terminated contracts. According to the decision approving the adjustment of the investment policy of the project by the Prime Minister in July 2023, the deadline for the implementation and operation of the Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway is set for September 30, 2025.

Once completed, Binh Khanh Bridge and Phuoc Khanh Bridge will surpass Phu My Bridge (connecting Thu Duc City and District 7) to become the largest cable-stayed bridges in Ho Chi Minh City.

According to information from the Ministry of Transport, the Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway project has a total length of 57.8km, passing through the provinces and cities including Long An (2.7 km), Ho Chi Minh City (26.4 km), and Dong Nai (28.7 km). The project is scheduled to be completed in the third quarter of 2025.

The total updated investment for the project is 29,586.9 billion VND. The project utilizes four sources of funding, including 8,065.7 billion VND from ADB loans, 10,101.3 billion VND from JICA loans, 3,872.4 billion VND from counterpart funds from the state budget, and 7,547.6 billion VND from the investor's self-arranged funds.
